Academic Philosophy

Undergrad Programmes

The Undergrad (UG) programmes offered at Chinmaya University (CU) consists on the one hand, of a spectrum ranging from pure courses in traditional Indian knowledge systems, to a blend of the ancient knowledge with modern streams such as Business Administration and Commerce; and on the other, courses in performing arts (Hindustani Vocal, Instrumental, Percussion and Bharatanatyam), thus truly reflecting the academic principles as enunciated in the Core Values of the University. The Performing Arts programmes and traditional Sanskrit programmes are offered in the Gurukula Mode. The other programmes will be offered in the modern-day university models.

Programme Design – Flexibility to choose from a diverse spectrum of courses

The programmes have been so designed that they fulfil the long-standing need of the student community for diversity and choice, much awaited in the higher education space in India. Consequently, the programmes are designed to allow every student to:

  • Develop unique skills and expertise for a more broad-based content that will render the student employable.
  • Provide a wide variety of minor courses to choose from complimenting their choice of major courses.
  • Select subjects to cater to their interest, nurture and grow it over time.

The University offers Majors in 10 specialisations of which 6 will be in the Gurukula Mode and Minors in 9 areas making it inter-disciplinary in nature. Based on these, over 30 Major/Minor combinations will be in offer for the students. The students need to declare their Major only at the end of the first year.

The courses in the programmes are intended to guide students to use their detailed knowledge of traditional disciplines, as also to engage with, and master, contemporary issues. Students completing these programmes will be equipped to pursue multiple life paths; whether it be academic research or teaching, professional employment in their core area, or undertake work in any of the contemporary disciplines that they may access, through CU’s diverse elective courses.

Gurukula mode
The unique aspect of the Chinmaya University Program is the opportunity to study a few of the courses through the regular university pedagogy or the Gurukula Mode. Two streams are available in the Gurukula mode:

  • Performing Arts
  • Sanskrit

Gurukula mode in the performing arts stream enables the University to create successful performing artists by combining the inherent advantages of a university model with the uniqueness of a Gurukula model. The University has created a unique platform for the good and excellent to come together in the best interests of the student. In the case of Sanskrit curriculum, it serves to preserve and pass on the original texts in its purity to the future generations by creating subject matter experts.

The 5-year Integrated Master’s Degree is delivered in the Gurukula mode at the end of which period, the student is awarded a Master’s Degree. Design is also underway for a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree.
